Beginner Running

Hi there, new to DailyMile

posted 4 months ago | Report

Hi guys. I'm new to the DM and am starting the couch to 5k program. I'm starting to run (walk/jog right now) as part of a major lifestyle change I'm making. I'm a 30 y/o Wisconsinite and am at about 340 pounds. My overall goal is to get down to 220, one pound at a time, each one lost is a little victory!

I'm well on my way as with a serious diet change and moderate exercise I've dropped 25 already.

I came just looking for a place to log my miles but realize this is a place that could keep me inspired and maybe make a few friends along the way.

My short term goal is just to be able to run. There is a local 5k here in the beginning of May and I'm hoping to be able to complete it without having to walk.

I have no problem logging the miles walking on my treadmill. Right now my running barrier seems to be building up the endurance/strength in my calves. (which I'm sure walking at a good clip on a slight incline will help over time).

ANYWAY! Thanks for listening, I'm looking forward to becoming active on DM.

:) Adam

  • Just a little bump. I am also looking for some like-minded, enthusiastic and supportive friends.

  • Just sent you a friend request. Like you I am trying to lose weight (currently 270 lbs) and am looking to get down to around 180. I did C25K last year, great program. I completed my first half marathon this past October. Unfortunately since that race I have kind of fallen off the wagon but am currently trying to get back on it.

    Good luck!

  • Hi Adam!
I'm right there with you! Trying to get rid of some weight and get healthy. I started the couch to 5k last week, for the second time...lol My goal is to get well through the c25k and then take on some local races. I'm currently struggling with the weather because I'm currently doing all of my running outdoors, gotta love Michigan winters.

If you'd like, I'm happy to be here to cheer you on!

  • Thanks Liz! That would be great! I'm across the lake in Wisconsin so I understand about the winters! Looks like we're in the same boat. Good luck!

  • Welcome Adam! Right there losing weight with you. You can do it, if you stick with it and remember that it is a lifestyle change and not just a diet. Work hard at it and you will do fine! FR Sent!

  • Thank you Michael x2 and Kellie!

Michael T. I really feel like I worked myself into a groove with my diet so I KNOW that won't be an issue. I'm excited to see the pounds start melting off. There are days I really want to push myself but reign it in so I don't overdo it. I'm sure an injury would set me back a ways.

Kellie, Thank you! You are absolutely right and it really helps to be in such a positive environment. That alone helps me to stay motivated.

I can relate to the major lifestyle change. Sounds like you are doing great!
Did you ever check out Jeff Galloway's training plans? They are walk/run plans for all levels. Nothing wrong with a bit of walking - it helps you finish strong!

  • Agree with Michael T.that this is a lifestyle change over the long haul, and it is going to take time for your body to accept what you are doing. Be patient and stay focused, you came to a great place for some helpful motivation when needed. Little battles win the war.

  • Congratulations on the lifestyle change! It's a tough commitment to make. I know, 'cause I started at 420. Through diet change and walking, I dropped to 285; like you, my ultimate goal is 220. I joined our local couch to 5k program in October and ran my first 5k on January 1st and dropped another 10 pounds). I enjoyed the program so much---and the satisfaction of actually being able to run a 5k---that I "graduated" into the intermediate program: I'm now training for a half marathon in May.

If you're looking for inspiration and encouragement, you'll find it at DM. The folks here are so supportive! I look forward to following your progress! Welcome!

    FR sent.
