Training for a Half Marathon

posted 4 months ago | Report

Hi everyone! I'm new here and I wanted to meet others who are training for their first 5k and/or half marathon! My name is Carolynn, I'm a college student, and I'm 21 years old! I will be running in my first 5k race at the end of Feb. and my first half marathon on May 5th.

Please introduce yourself and tell me what event you're training for and when the event is! Also, feel free to add me if you feel that we could help motivate each other!

  • I ran my first half last October, and trying to decide where my next half is going to come. I'm beginning the half training now though, just in case one pops up that I'd like to do.

It took me 10 years out of college to start running. It's a good thing to start earlier :)

  • Hi Carolynn! I have started and stopped the C25K many times in the past year but never get past W1D3 because I'm my own worst enemy and I talk myself out of it. My goal for 2012 is to RUN (or at least mostly run) a 5K. I haven't picked which one yet but it will be in addition to the Dirty Girl Mud Run, which I'm doing with my sister in August.

  • Hi! I'm training for my first half marathon, the Surf City Half on February 5th. Planning on running it in VFF's and because of the compressed time frame I've been pretty aggressive increasing the mileage. Best of luck to you and your training!

  • I'm new here too. I completed the C25K app last year, and decided I could do much more, so I did the Bridge to 10K app. I decided to do my first 5K in December to keep motivated to train. I decided in mid-December to complete my first Marathon by my next birthday (Dec). In the meantime, I've signed up to run the Cowtown Half Marathon in Feb. I completed a 15K last week, and I've signed up for a 15K in Feb. The last race got me hooked.
My plan is to run in the Marine Corps Marathon in October; however, the spaces fill up quickly, so If I can't get into that one, I'll be running one of the local races in the Fall.

Good luck on your training. My advice is to actually sign up for the races. Having the financial commitment goes a long way to helping you stay motivated.

  • Hello!! I'm Jacqui :) I'm 3 weeks away from finishing C25K and have my first 5K race on February 11. After that, I'm going to start training for my first half on May 26th. I have a 10K race planned between the 5K and half-- it's actually on May 5th, so I'll be thinking about you & Nic while I'm running a little less than half your distance. FR sent!!

I'm training for my first half marathon, also in May. We're about the same age (I'm 22) and I'm also a university student so we have quite a bit in common! If you'd like to keep in touch about our training, feel free to add me. Good luck!

  • Welcome!

    I'm training for three half-marathons:
Rock n Roll Dallas (March 25)
    Joplin Memorial Run (May 19)
Rock n Roll St. Louis (October 21)

I'm still pretty new to running, but I'm trying to get more serious about it. I'm a pretty slow runner, but I keep track of my times and try to improve with each race. I want to set a new 5K PR and a new half PR this year.

I've completed two full marathons (Chicago & County Music in Nashville) as well as three Half Marathons (Atlanta x 2 & Mercedes 1/2 in Birmingham) I am currently training to run the GA Half Marathon on March 18th. It's been great to get back running and I am inspired by stories like yours and others just starting out. There are some great tips on this site. Best of luck on all your training. FR sent. Cheers

  • Hi Carolynn! I have been running on and off for years but never very seriously. After my father was diagnosed with Cancer last year, I made a promise to myself to run a half marathon in his honor in 2012. I started training already, barely, and will running my first 5K this weekend.

I am planning to reach HM by March/April.
    Good luck with everything!

  • Hey, Carolynn! I'm training for my annual February Double Down. First weekend in Feb is the BridgeFest, a local 5K that raises money for the neighborhood YMCA. Last weekend in Feb is the ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run (10K) in downtown Houston. I run these races every year because it's fun. I've go a half marathon coming up on April 1. (no foolin')
