Pacing question

Warning: Possible shock caused by my ignorance...

I completed C25K a while back and ran my 1st 5K in Disney World! Loved the program and wasn't concerned with my pace. The C25K iPhone App man would say "Run" and I ran. He said "Walk" and I walked. Mission accomplished.

I love being able to log my training here on dailymile in anticipation for a 10K in April BUT... it just occurred to me that I may not be entering my time correctly.

1) I hop on the treadmill (winter... ugh)
2) Warm-up walk 3-5 minutes
3) When the display tells me I achieved my desired mileage, I slow back down to a walk for cool-down (5ish minutes)
4) THEN, I was recording whatever the treadmill ending time was when I hopped off.

I don't think I'm supposed to be including warm-up and cool-down, huh? I mean, in a race I wouldn't do that... right?

  • It's really a personal preference. My guess is most people would do the same thing you did. Generally I will include my warm up and cool down as long as they were still connected to my workout. After all, I still had to travel that distance!

Some people might only feel the core of their workouts are legitimate to log, and others might add in walking around during the day. There's nothing inherently wrong about these ways, but if you're trying to do what most of us do for comparison reasons, I'd keep doing what you're already doing. Ultimately, it's your log and it's up to you what "counts", but I think you're on the same page as most people.

  • Margaret, I agree...I think your log will be just fine as it is. I always just make notes about each run and indicate there if I added a warm up or whatever (i.e. warmed up for 2 min. then ran/walked 20/1 for three sets then cooled down for 2 min.) - this just helps me track my progress later. It's really about what you want to track for your own personal reasons!! =) Enjoy using DM!!
