New Cyclist looking for motivational friends

posted almost 2 years ago | Report

Hey guys,

I just started cycling about a month and a half ago and have really taken to it. I'd love to meet new people that have a common interest in cycling and would like to discuss training, gear, etc.

I currently bike to work a few times a week and enjoy riding on the trails near my house. I have a mountain bike, but I occasionally borrow my friend's road bike as well. I'm considering purchasing a road bike in the very near future and would love for any tips on what i should be looking for.

  • I started cycling 1 year ago and just found dailymile.com today. I have a road bike and would like to get a mountain bike also. I bike to work, but it's a really short ride, and go for rides 4-6 days a week.

I am a newbie so I don't have much experience with trying a lot of different bikes. I can tell you that I am really happy with my bike, Cannondale Synapse. It has a more relaxed geometry which is great for longer rides.

When I was shopping for bikes I was told by a few sources that I should get at least Shimano 105 components if I planned to ride a lot.

    Hey Jared,

Thanks for your response! A friend of mine bought a used cannondale a while back, but i haven't been able to take it out for a spin yet. A guy i ride with has a Bianchi with the shimano 105 components and loves it. From what i hear it's a big step up from the tiagra. I'll definitely look for that when i go to buy a new bike. Thanks for the tip!

  • I have been riding competitively since i was 14 and have rode all kinds of bikes...I have found no significant difference in bikes because of who it is made by... First step in you purchasing a road bike is what type of road cycling are you preparing to do...if just commuter type riding...a good hybrid..or commuter bike would definitely be more cost efficient and totally more comfortable ride for ya...If you are not planning on racing ar riding 100 miles at a 20 plus mile an hour average...you probably do not want a rigid frame like i ride...I always get a bike one frame sixe smaller than i need just for the rigidness..cause i like to race ans ride fast...lol...I hope i have helped you a little and maybe saved you a little money...happy cycling...and good...keep peddalin...

Hi Matt - I started cycling more years ago than I care to remember and the joy of cycling continues to grow as does the stable of bikes.

At any given price point you will find minimal differences between brands. It is a highy competitive business and the retail markup on a bike is significantly less than on other commodities. Your local bike shop makes most of it's money on selling accessories and doing repair/maintenance.

My advice is to figure out first how much you are willing to spend. Compare across several brands to see what that gets you. If you are commuting by bike the money you save in gas can go towards your purchase. Thats the rationale I used when I built up my first go-fast road bike. Ask other riders in your area where is the best bike shop and don't be afraid to travel to find one.

Craigslist has some good bargins and lots of not so good. I have bought 2 and sold 1 on Craigslist but you really need to be knowledgeable about what you are looking at. Not just from a price point but also the mechanical aspect of the whole thing.

Good luck on journey. Remember that cycling is a lifetime sport.

  • I started to cycle May this year, after signing up for 80 km race with my colleagues :) I did not put any effort to choose the right bike, but despite some problems at the beginning, I'm quite happy with it now. I cycle one-two times a week to work (about 27 km one way) and enjoy it. And of course I like to see the improvement :)

  • I've always loved cycling, but only got a road bike a year ago and have started trying to seriously train.

Would be happy to exchange training details - especially if you'll help to motivate me :-)
