In the UK cycles are classed in law as a 'carriage' and so can only be ridden on the rode as opposed to the pavement.

I've been yelled at, cursed at, even had things thrown at me--all while legally biking on the far right of the road, not impeding the flow of traffic. Some people are just jerks.
One person went so far out of his way to roll down his passenger window to yell at me, and then while I was stopped behind him at a stop light, he opened his door so he could lean out and continue yelling at me, citing that it wasn't legal for a bike to be on the road because there wasn't a bike path and that I had to be on the sidewalk. I laughed at his lack of common sense as he sped away to avoid me tailing him.

The last thing you can give an angry motorist is a URL, but here is one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Roads_Movement
In short, paved roads in America are the historical result of the hard efforts of, you guessed it, bicyclists.

My personal favorite is being yelled at to ride my bike on the sidewalk....I have little no patience for ignorance.

The irony is that one day I was driving to work and saw an ambulance clip a biker who was traveling so fast he ended up flying over his bike and landing tens of feet onto the side of the road. Many motorists just don't respect the biker or their right to space on the road.

Gotta love riding in Taiwan.
Wrong side of the road? Cars and motorbikes will give way.
Left turn across traffic at the intersection? No problem, people slow down and let you through.
Running a red? Must have been their fault for not looking.Shouting and hooting? No way, everyone smiles like nothing happened, nothing to see, just move on.
And BTW, they burnt their handbook and I never received mine.

Just yell back "Learn the law, idiot!" Also get the plate number and report them for road-rage. Many states will rip 'em a new one for this behavior!

Its really a bad idea to respond to motorists with your own aggression, just take it and be glad that you are the one in shape and not poluting the earth because if you piss them off more then things might escalate and a 2 ton metal car is going to win over 200 lbs of bike and flesh every time

Indeed. My philosophy on all modes of transportation is that right of way is always government by mass times velocity. The greater one always wins.

Good for you! I once rode and almost hit a parked car b/c some wacko couldn't slow down and give me some elbow room. I could have used that handbook then...or maybe rocks so I can throw it at 'em

This is why I always wear my earphones and listen to some sweet tunes. My response is always no response.

Well, this is sort of my (somewhat tongue in cheek)...."Hate Crime....I think so!" thread. Why don't the stupid Bicycle Advocacy groups fight more for education instead of bike lanes and paths and trails and more government funding! It's no good having more access and bike lanes if they're unsafe to use! Many people in cars are absolute morons but it's also our responsibility to obey stop signs, red lights and the normal traffic laws, we don't do ourselves any favours pretending we're above them.
And don't get me started with the absolutely ridiculous, asinine, morons that do Critical Mass rides! They put us (actual cyclists) in great danger and make "us" look really bad in the public eye!
