Post Knee Operation cycling. any tips?

How do you go about getting back into cycling after a knee operation? Slowly I'm guessing, but do you guys have any tips, info to share? any of you guys been through it?

I am finding it really dificult to get into proper cycling, as my knee seems to be really weak, and hurts quite badly after each ride.

Strengthen it in the gym as well as on the bike...the stronger you make the muscles in the quad and hamstring the better it will respond

  • I had two knee operations - both for meniscal tears - and found recovery challenging. I ended up - don't laugh - using a WiiFit which forces you to use each leg, one at a time, and so develop strength in each leg. This speeds recovery in your weak leg - if you move to cycling too early, your stronger leg (the one you didn't injure) will do most of the work and leave the other leg lagging behind. So look for single leg exercises, even if not on a WiiFit - maybe using a powerplate or just one legged leg curls and leg extensions in the gym. Cycle gently occasionally, using an indoor exercise bike first. I don't cycle much, running is my sport - and it was about 4 months before I felt comfortable enough to cycle at pace and to return to running. But I went on to run the London Marathon a year after my op so I know recovery comes eventually.

  • Thanks for the response man. Have been looking at doing some simple excercizes, but man I suck at keeping to them. Swimming and cycling are the only form of training that can hold my interest.

Guess I should just man up and do this thing right?

  • yep, you've got to get something going. I struggled with swimming - you'd think it would be easy but the downward pressure required against the resistance of the water made my knee sore. good luck, get to it.
