Good beginning bike

posted 8 months ago | Report

I have been considering buying my first real road bike, so what's a good bike to begin with? I know getting one that is the right fit is important. Most of the use mine would be getting is road to and from work about 10 miles away.

If I were in your shoes, I would strongly consider getting a cheap single speed like the Trek/Gary Fisher Gritty. There's less maintenance, fewer components to break or wear out, and less to worry about getting stolen. It also has bosses for mounting fenders or racks to help carry stuff with your commute. The longer you ride the more you will know what you want in your next bike and whether or not your really like the sport.

  • Everyone will shoot you their opinion, so why the heck shouldn't I? :)

The new craze is to do a single speed for several reasons...less maintenance being the only one that I'd agree would be good for a beginner...I personally wouldn't have a beginner commuter get one...I'd recommend a commuter/hybrid bike....also has all the mounts for racks and fenders, but will have gears to help with hills and the like.

Truth is, go to your local bike shop and test a few out and see what you like...you'll know what feels good and what doesn't! It also will depend on your budget, specialized is what I currently ride, Trek, Gary Fisher, Marin, Cannondale, the list of manufacturers is a mile long...but go test ride some and see what you're comfortable with!

My next ride will be a bamboo frame bike from WebbWorks http://bamboobikemaker.com I'm thinking the hilltribe will be my frame of choice, I've met the guys in person when I was last in Thailand, they are incredible rides! ..though a frame will put you back a bit...

  • Thanks for the responses! I am planning a trip to the local bike shop sometime this week to try a few out. The last bike I had I got ages ago and rode it essentially until it fell apart. Way too small for me, but it got me the few miles I needed to get from my apartment to campus. I think I will need something with gears just because the region I live in has some pretty good hills
