I'm an avid runner. I want to do duathlons this year. What kind of short should I purchase?

  • I wouldn't wear anything but a biking short. You can get regular looking shorts with a bike short underneath but I have found even those to be hot and unacceptable. You can get many different types of biking shorts in various weights. And you can get the full length for cooler weather. All the shorts will have a pad in them. The "genuine" models will have a chamois skin pad. This will require the use of a chamois cream on your bum to help lubricate things. You'll have to discover the one that works for you. You can also get shorts with gel pads in them. IMHO, much more comfortable. BTW, you do not wear your 'tighty-whiteys' underneath bike shorts. You wear just the bike shorts.

I would go with triathlon shorts. They have a thinner chamois (pad) than true cycling shorts which will be much less bulky. It's important to have a thinner chamois to allow for full range of motion and prevent chafing. The chamois in tri shorts typically dries a lot quicker as well since it's much lighter.

Some good manufacturers to look into:
    Zoot - http://www.zootsports.com/
    Pearl Izumi - http://www.pearlizumi.com/
    TYR - http://www.tyr.com/shop/
    Craft - http://www.craft-usa.com/

    Hope that helps.

  • Good advice about shorts but more important - get a bike that fits you comfortably, and a female specific saddle too!
I did the opposite some years ago (cycling to duathlon) enjoyed it - lots of fun & good cross training.
