What is the best bike?

asked about 1 year ago | Report

I'm looking into buying my first "real" bike. It will be used for basic street use, not on trails, and should be comfortable to ride for medium distances (5-50 miles). I'm not planning to race or anything, but it will be used for fitness riding, not cruising.
Any cyclists have tips or recommendations?

Thanks!

  • Hi Emily,

I bought a Specialized Sirrus Elite Hybrid for my exercising. Love it. With 700x32c tires, it's a comfortable ride. What ever bike you choose, just be sure it's the right size and has been adjusted for your body size. Trek also has some nice bikes too. Set a budget and shop around. My bike was about $660 + tax.

  • The "best" bike is the one you have, ride and enjoy. I considered talking about the Calfee Dragonfly but with a price north of $10K I didn't think that was what you were looking for.

Go to a FEW Local Bike Shops (LBS) talk to the employees, look at different brands and start learning about cycling. Just because Lance rides it, doesn't mean it's the right bike for you. Ray was right on the money, fit is VERY important.

Since you mention 50 mile rides (work up to them) clothing will be important, padded shorts, gloves and helmet. Shoes and clipless pedals may come into play. Learning to fix flats and the tools and supplies to fix them will be important, your LBS is a great resource.

The little bit of riding I've done on hybrids I didn't like, there didn't seem to be enough different positions for me to stay comfortable on a long ride. I prefer the "racer" 10-speed style, with drop bars. So go on test rides and see what feels good to you.

With research and smart shopping the bike you bring home will be the best bike for you.

go to a bike shop and try out a bunch, they're all different. I went to the bike shop with a particular bike in mind and came out with a totally different one (I bought a Trek Lexa).

but more seriously- get thyself to your LBS. There is no 'best' bike - but there's probably a selection of really good bikes that meet your needs. My advice- spend just a little more (if you're able) so in a year, you won't be thinking that you need to upgrade. You probably want something in an 'entry level race' bike category. If you can swing one with Shimano 105 (component group), that's a big step up from Sora and Tiagra
