Why locked challenge?

I notice that some challenges are locked. I am confused what benefits there are by not allowing people in?

  I'd assume if you want a private challenge that only your friends can participate in, or something like that, then you'd want to lock the challenge. So for an office challenge, or a challenge between buddies from school, etc.
