Maybe if they are a walker/runner/athlete, someone who is amazingly supportive, or someone who has similar goals or struggles that I do.

I agree. It's important to me that my dailymile friends support and motivate me as much as I motivate them. I like seeing that someone who struggles is able to overcome their problem instead of sulking over it and not learning from that experience.

Not having picked any friends yet... I can't say that I have any specific criteria. On the NikeRunning site I'm friends with two people, one who I work with and one whose been in some of the same challenges.
But, if I were to have some criteria... I suppose it would be based on someone who can support a truly friendly competition. Someone whose level isn't too far off mine with whom one can exchange support on goals and motivate me to try harder.
Right now... the challenges and personal goals provide the motivation to keep working. So, being new to the site... picking friends is not something I'm quite "there" with yet.

That's a good question Cristina. I kind of pick people who are supportive and who are or are aspiring marathoners.

So far, I've just picked people I know and then accepted others that know them.

Something no one's brought up yet: One way I've chosen dailymile friends is by location. I find I've gravitated toward people in the same general geographic area...I think it's because I want to gauge how others are coping with the snow, ice, etc. at the same time that I am. Other friends at DM are real world and/or facebook friends I've had relationships of varying levels. I've 'defriended' two ppl since I've been here because they were more trainers than just avg ppl trying to improve/take care of their health. It wasn't that I had anything against them personally, but I actually wasn't finding myself motivated by them. I don't always have time to interact as much as I'd like (I'm a writer so I spend a lot more time at the computer than most ppl, and so sometimes I just can't juggle more computer time in); but, I do try to engage a few times a week here because I know that it is important. Cristina, you were the first to comment and motivate me here when I signed up in December; so, I know you are a really special person here. Great question!

Being local is a definite plus... being able to discuss common experiences with some runs and having common weather conditions would be a good basis for discussions and motivations.

I agree.
It's difficult. I'd love to say I'll be friends with everyone, but that's not the case. I like to see someone struggle. It sounds bad, but I like to. I want to see them struggle, but also overcome the issue and have the can-do attitude instead of the won't-do attitude. There's a difference and for me, that's huge!
Being supportive is also very important. I really do my best to go amongst the site and motivate and comment on their workouts. I do my best, but I can't do it for everyone. I just can't devote that amount of time to do so. But, I want a friend who can support and motivate me just as much as I do them. Comment on my workouts, tell me what you love, etc. It makes me feel good!
I like to see what someone's goals are. Are they working towards something?! I hate people that say "oh, I want to run a 5k" and do nothing to work towards it. Goals are important, and I could go on and on, but it is.

I try and take as much time as I can to motivate and support others. I don't go around just trolling the site and post the same one-liners. Sometimes it is just the "you did great", but sometimes I have more to say than other situations. It just depends.

Location, similar training goals, similar friends, seeing a comment I like. Sometimes I just like their picture LOL.

If they are female and there are kids in their avatar picture, or there is something else that gives away the fact that they are a mom, then I might invite them. I have five children, ages 1 to 9, and running helps me so much to be a better mom, but it is tricky to make time for the running with the kids. I like seeing what other moms are accomplishing with their training and how they are balancing that training with motherhood.
Elsewise, I only stick with people I know IRL, or who have asked me to be their friend, regardless of whether or not they are moms.

I agree with similar goals, location, etc but also gravitate to people who are banging it out every day (regardless of pace) as opposed to a few times a week. A related question I've been thinking about...what's the optimal number of friends? I'm at around 20 and find that to be a manageable number to follow, support, etc. Could handle several more but not sure I would find having 300 friends useful.

I've selected friends who I know, but have accepted friend requests from anyone else. Tried to get some of my friends to join up here, but nobody I've suggested it to has joined yet. Pretty cool site, though. Love the interaction and, being anal about tracking my data, I love that aspect. I was fortunate enough to join right after the new year, so this enables me to know my annual mileage at a glance.

I'm not picky, but people get dropped from my list if they have no activity for the last month or so, unless they were just off sick or something after an injury. I actively seek out people from Seattle or Perth (my hometown) though.

i look for others with similar goals and that they consistent log in. If i see they just dabbled, I move on. I've sent a couple of "I miss your trainings" but don't hear back.

Hmmm. I tend to friend people I know are on the Daily Mile, mostly. But I also see who else is leaving comments for my friends, and I'll check them out and friend them if I feel like we might have something in common!

I gravitate to folks who are working hard to accomplish their goals, who are motivational, inspirational and supportive to each other. DM represents to me a community of athletes of all descriptions and abilities who are united though a common thread. I have only been part of the running community for about 5 years, met several super people at the races who have helped me out over the last few years. The amount of folks that have helped and continue to help me achieve my goal of participating in my 1st triathlon has been phenomenal to say the least. The amount of folks that have friended me on DM in the short time that I have been on here has been wonderful, the amount of inspiration and support I have received since being here is beyond words. I don't think I have met a bad friend yet on DM, that alone speaks volumes :) I try to motivate as many folks as I can on here, (and yes sometimes I can only get the one liners in, but I read their post because I am truely interested) it is my way of returning back to the community, a community that has given me so much of which I am foreever grateful!
