Do you shower before an event/race?

posted 8 months ago | Report

This has been puzzling me for a while. On my last 5k two weeks ago, my dad invited all of us for breakfast right after the race. I said.. "EWWW" all sweaty, why don't you give me a few minutes to go shower? I don't like to get out of the house without showering even if I am late for work; and I added, "I even showered before we left this morning" He laugh at me and said.. Ohhh so that's why you can't seem to beat your time, your body is all loose from the shower. I said yeah right!!.. SO the question is.. does showering before a race affect your performance in the race or not? Any one?

  • I shower after a race, but not before. I don't know about the body feeling relaxed and all that, but your speed/motivation is played by factors like, sleeping well, eating well, hydration, training, tiredness, etc. But a celebration meal after a race is always called for, stinky or unstinky. I never turn down a nice social meal! =)

  • Not, before, but not because I think it will affect my race. I just feel like it's a waste of time to take a shower and then go get all sweaty. I doubt it will affect your race one way or the other. If showering before a run makes you feel better, then go for it, you'll probably run better...

  • That is funny, i shower after I work out. However I still shower in the morning.

  • I barely have time to get to the race let alone shower. I wake up in just enough time to wake up, get on my clothes, then drive to the event. No shower or streching.

Now sure how a shower before woule effect you either way though...

  • Yes, I shower before an event, I would hate to gross someone out by stinking when they were next to me. I

  • Lol this is funny but cool. I feel the same as Kim. Even during my day specially in the summer I may take up to 4 showers. But again I still don't think showering will affect ur performance, if anything I think it may help you wake up.

  • Depends on how I feel when I wake up. If I need to wake up a little more, then I will, but the last few races, I haven't.

  • Always after a race. Some of the races I had to drive about 45-minutes to 1-hour to get there. So after the race if a bathroom was handy I would use the sink, take a sponge-bath, and put a little "Speedstick" on. After that me and my family would get something to eat, and browse around the mall, walmart, or whatever we could find. When we got tired of browsing we would go home.

  • I don't shower before a race. Because I'm not a morning person and the races are so early. Also I'm about to go run for 2 hours in a half-marathon and get all sweaty anyways so what is the point. I do shower right after because I don't want to gross anyone out. I don't think the shower is going to affect your performance. I good night's sleep and a balanced meal before you run is going to help more. I know some people who shower before and put on makeup. They say they have lucky lip gloss. The did a full ironman in it so I wasn't going to argue.

The real question is "how many girls put on makeup before a race?"

At my last Half-marathon I saw a complete blonde barbie in all pink Nike running outfit. Perfect hair, makeup, outfit. I thought to myself I wonder what she is going to look like at the end. I saw at the racers finish area and she look totally the same and I think she beat me. :-) I on the other hand was a big ball of sweat.

I don't see the point in showering or applying makeup before a race. I'm just going to need a shower afterwards and I would rather sleep as long as possible. Of course, I already have no problem with leaving the house without makeup- I do that most days, anyway. :)

  • I don't shower before a race so that those who are drafting me smell me. It forces them to get out in front of me for a while and block the wind. Just kidding about the whole BO as a strategic tool. I always feel better after I shower so I usually shower before. I don't think it affects me one way or the other for a time though.

I'm with you Daniel! I just get up and get ready and drink a sports drink to get myself going. I shower at night anyway so no funk going on before a race! Afterwards though I just have a change of clothes waiting for me if I plan on hanging around or something. I can't stand myself after a run!

Not this girl! I would hate for mascara to drip in my eye....it burns!!!! I barely wear any makeup as it is, too much trouble.

Ha, ha. I wonder how much make up was left after the swim and if they took transition time to reapply for the bike and run?

  • Never shower before a race or a morning run. Never put on makeup before a run, either. That would be crazy, LOL!
