Marathon Training food

posted 10 months ago | Report

I've always been lucky with eating whatever I want. I'm finishing up my 4th week of marathon training. Last week I ended with 55 miles. I was surprised when I weighed in last night that I actually haven't lost any weight. I was expecting to be down a little.
Anybody else notice similar things when in training mode?

  • Could you possibly be eating more without knowing it? Some runners have a tendency to consumer higher amounts of fats and proteins when training. I recall reading an article last year about this very thing in Runners World. They mentioned that increasing is necessary but sometimes our bad habits have a way of sneaking into the eating routine and it actually doesn't help in the long run. The idea would be to consume but to do so wisely. Staying to foods that are in the Low GI index. Just a thought.

  • I tend to do the opposite of what Nathan suggested. 50+ mpw requires a lot of carbs and antioxidants (because exercise is a ton of oxidation). So, heavy on the veggies and grains (whole, if possible) for me. Plus, proteins and fats sit heavily in my gut and make training uncomfortable.

If you're shooting for your very best time. In a marathon 1lb = 1 min. So, if you can take a few lbs off, that might be the difference between BQing or not. Just don't try to do it in the last couple weeks. You want to walk up to the starting line with as much readily available glycogen as your body can store.
