1) I use a Garmin eTrex Venture HC, a full blown navigation device as I prefer fell running (mountain). Saved my life last weekend.
2) Use the supplied software MapSource from Garmin
3) Yes/No maybe, the eTrex produces .gdb files which I convert to GPX then process them to produce KML files. These are mapped using Google Maps and posted to my blog.See www.rantoutloud.org.uk/2009/06/sunrise-4.html for the latest map. Still writing up the text for that outing from last weekend.

2. I don't use the Garmin software or other web sites. They've failed too many times on me. While the 305 is a great running watch, the USB/data "ease of use" has been a massive FAIL for me - especially when compared to Nike+.

I just got a forerunner 405 and don't even know how to use it all yet. I plan on reading all about it and becoming an expert on a plane ride in the morning. I have only used it twice but already I love it. I travel a bit and the idea that I don't have to pre plan routes and that it can even get me back to my motel if I happen to get lost makes it completely worthwhile. I can check in, run out as far as I need to, try to get back on my own and if that does not work I get to rely on the Garmin and probably even get in an extra mile or two. Very, very cool. I love running in new places but usually never know for sure how far I went or the pace. Now I know all of that exactly. The uploading on the 405 is wireless. Just get the Garmin within 8 feet of the computer and it uploads it to your account. I love technology.

Anc i cant get my log data off my watch if i am using linux ... :P

If you are going to accept TCX files, consider accepting compressed TCX files. Garmin Connect cannot seem to figure this out and it's one of the reasons I gave up on them.
Of course the issue then becomes scalability, because folks will want to upload years worth of data. I've done several things to try and make that feasible.
Also, just realized this is an old thread, so i'll cut it short.

1. Forerunner 310XT & 405.
2. Yes.
3. While I upload automatically to Garmin Connect, I synch my resulting activities to BuckeyeOutdoors.com, which ROCKS! You can see how my Garmin data synch's with BuckeyeOutdoors via my public training log http://buckeyeoutdoors.com/training/traininglog?viewid=1866In my opinion the primary area where Garmin Connect is superior versus BuckeyeOutdoors (or for that matter Garmin's own Training Center application) is via Connect's cool auto-terrain adjustment feature. This relatively new functionality automatically over-rides all GPS's inherenty wildly inaccurate elevation data to instead using the highly accurate USGS' topographical overlay. Other than this feature, BuckeyeOutdoors' numerous feature set makes Garmin Connect look pale in comparison (it's a shame that DailyMile doesn't offer this type of functionality, but as I don't use this site for its training log it's a bit of a moot point).

1. 310 XT
2. Yes - I find it quite useful and is it a part of the suite of tools I use to track my progress and keeping myself motivated.
3. .tcx files are the "log" of your workout. They are XML formatted and contain a variety of values based on exactly what you have in the way of gear. For example, my 310 XT came with an HRM so I get the usual lat/lon, altitude, time, distance from measurement, altitude... and interestingly I also see footpod data even though I don't have a Garming foot pod (but I do have a Nike one). The files are flat text files and easily read by a text editor or writing a program to read them. As to the location, I can only speak to the Mac Location but I suspect some similar structure exists on Windows... the question is where. The Mac location is ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Devices/<your device serial number>/History/
There are a number of directories in the following location: ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Devices/<your device serial number>/ some of which may also contain .tcx files.answered almost 2 years ago |Report
