I used to have one for my 3G, but like you said, it couldn't hold anything. Plus, the cover was plastic and the touch screen would barely work through it... and it would always slide down my arm! lol. I'm interested in finding one for my samsung galaxy for when it starts getting warmer, but for now my running jacket pockets hold everything great :).
Sorry I couldn't help, hope you're able to find something that works for you!

I've done a lot of research on these and have found a solution that I am happy with, but based on what you are asking for, you may want to check out the variety of ArmPocket armbands. Many folks really like them, but they always looked a little bulky to me.
As for what I use? I have a Marware SportShell Convertible iPhone 4/4S Case & Armband. I've had one for my 3GS and now my 4S. They were both great, but I absolutely think this new one is killer. It makes for a nice low-profile everyday case, and then the back panel can be easily slid out and replaced with the clip version that works with the included armband. I find the armband secure and comfortable and the clip panel can also be used as a stand if watching movies on your phone.
As for carrying keys and grub, if I'm going any more than an hour, I'm carrying water, and if I'm carrying water, that means I've got my waterbelt or CamelBak on. So that's where I'd stow fuel & keys if I wanted to. Otherwise I usually hide my keys somewhere before I take off. Minimum I always where a RoadID (www.roadid.com) for identification.
When it rains I have a couple cases, including a waterproof one, but so far I'm not satisfied. The best one, the H2O Audio Amphibx Fit Waterproof Armband, I'm convinced causes the GPS to be less reliable. Twice I've had issues with it, where I've never had problems using the Marware. Seems like a weird thing to cause GPS problems, but it's the only new variable.
Hope my experiences help you in finding a solution.

It's not an armband but I've found the spibelt doesn't shift at all. http://www.spibelt.com/
I've tried a couple armbands (different brands) and they both annoyed me to no end. They just slid around or eventually fell to my elbow after a couple miles no matter how much I tightened it.

I tried an armband, but it irritated me. In a pinch, I'll just use the strap of my sports bra so I don't have to hold it. If that's not appealing to ya, try the spibelt. It's pretty awesome. It holds my keys, iphone4 and id and does not bounce around at all.
I got mine a Sports Authority, but here's the site: http://www.spibelt.com/
oops....of, what Jeff said. :)

Hey Roya!
I had the same question not long ago. I stumbled upon a Mashable.com review of the best armbands in the world. They voted the Sporteer Armband (http://mashable.com/2012/02/05/best-iphone-armbands/#462731-Sporteer-Armband) the best one, so I purchased it. It's working great and I love that it has a pocket on the back to hold my keys, ID, and credit card. Unfortunately, I couldn't find them in any stores, but they're on Amazon and they have a website: www.pdostore.com.
Plus, it was only $25 bucks : )
