  • As many calories as you would burn sitting on your couch watching tv.

  • The sauna isn't about losing calories and or weight. Any weight loss is just water (sweat) that is immediately replaced as soon as you drink something. Sauna's benefits are only skin deep since all it does is open your pores.

  • Patrick is correct, it's water not calories and you'll get it right back, as Laz said, but there are other benefits to a sauna. I have read several articles in Runner's World about using them to "train" the body for long distance HOT races.

The health benefits seem to include making the body more efficient at higher temps. The real killer of the run is internal body temp, you can use the sauna to make your body more efficient at higher temps, it increases pulse, pushing more blood toward the surface to cool the body, thus helping to oxygenate the muscles and skin as well clearing the pores. Most of the material I have read says no more than 10-20 minutes per session is best.

Keep in mind I am paraphrasing from what I have read and not quoting directly, if you google "sauna for runners" you will find some of the articles I have read, basically read the opinions of the current experts and judge for yourself whether or not its for you
