WHY do we run?

asked 4 months ago | Report

What makes us go out there in sometimes bad weather, sometimes with little aches some with more pain. Why do we push our bodies so hard? Why do we keep going back for more What is the addiction to running? Is it the endorphin high - do we suffer from mild or not so mild ADD? Is it for the weight loss?
Or are we just insane?
I always wonder what makes runners do what they do. I know for a fact it is not easy. I know it makes me feel better. I have more energy yet I am more tired. Just wondering

  • I started running for weight loss after having my baby. Not only have I achieved the weight loss, I have more energy, I feel and look better, and I get some much needed "me" time. And yes, sometimes I do think I'm a bit insane . . . when its below freezing, drizzling, and I'm running down the road with a grin on my face :)

  • I started running as a challenge to run one 5k. Once I crossed the finish line at that race, I never stopped running. I don't do it for weight loss - actually my struggle is just the opposite - I had to learn how to maintain my weight. Running is my sanity. I feel like I solve the problems of the world when I run. It's me time. It gives me energy. I feel better. Especially as I've built up endurance as seen myself progress, a lot of it has also been about proving to myself that I can do whatever I put my mind to. Each milestone is such a huge feeling of accomplishment.

  • I started running so I could run in a brand new race in my area involving history of beer in the area. Since I am a bit of a history and beer buff, it encouraged me to train. Joined a local running group, enjoyed it, was convinced to join them for a marathon, fell in love with running, and now I run everyday. Now I do it because it just feels natural.

  • Personal goal. I wanted to BQ. I knew that cold dark runs in the sleet was one of the steps it took to get there... so I did it. It worked. I'm totally jazzed. If it were easy... i'd be less jazzed.

  • I started running again about a year ago to lose weight. I rediscovered how much I enjoyed running and listening to my favorite music. I then decided I wanted to try my hand at racing, which forced me to be disciplined about training and provide goals to achieve. I also enjoy the "runner's high" feeling when I have a great run.

So, I lost 20 pounds and ran my first 5K and 10K races during 2011. For 2012, I'm prepping for my first half marathon in April and considering a full marathon this fall. Will probably lose a few more pounds in the process :-)

  • For me its performance orriented. I know that i need to train to achieve my goals, If i dont then i wont be able to.

In sommer i run because i enjoy it... but if im honest running in winter when its windy, raining, or icy just isnt a whole lot of fun.... Id still run if its 'not too bad' for fun, but if i was a 'just for fun' runner id do a lot less running in winter.

  • I got sucked in to running through a personal challenge from an experienced runner, and it became my quest to train and push through my first race, and then the next one, etc. But these were solo challenges--victories to share with friends, co-workers, anyone who would listen (or pretend to listen!). Over the years, a social network formed around running and became inextricably linked to the rest of my life. Some of the best things come during group runs and racing together, and with the friends that I've met along the way (even here in DM). In some way, I think that we run to keep that network going as long as we can.
