Desert R.A.T.S 25 mile trail race
This is an incredibly beautiful race course, held at a gorgeous time of year. Super-mellow, fabulous people. The course was a hair long- my Garmin read 25.9 miles. Wish they would have just called it a trail marathon and been done with the whole thing. There were NO AWARDS... nada. Totally lame to cross the finish line and not have SOMETHING put in your hand, be it a bottle of water or a memento from the race. No porto-potties anywhere on the course except at the start line, so everyone was pulling over. Everyone carried their own water bottle/hydration pack; there was water and gatorade at the aid stations and you had to refill your bottle. No food for anyone that had any dietary nuances, though the lady accommodated my gluten-free request by grilling a burger and serving it without the bun. Spectators could easily get to all the aid stations and it was AWESOME to see the same people at each place, cheering for people. The bibs were reusable cloth; cool idea, but I would have liked to have kept it as a memento since there was nothing else given (except the race t-shirt). The swag bags were pretty slim pickings as well; a Hammer gel, the requisite paper stuffers and a container for electrolyte capsules. Great race though; tons of fun and spectacular scenery.
