Partly races, partly family party, partly picnic on the grass, the 2011 Skyland Mountain Run at Radonich Ranch drew nearly 300 entrants and raised more than $9,000 for nonprofits and charitable organizations.
With both 5K and 10K races, and times recorded for eight age grou...ps, both male and female, there were multiple prizes awarded. A brother-sister pair, Grant and Jennifer Foster, turned in the best overall times for male and female runners in the 5K race, and their brother Chris was first in the under 14 class in that race.
Once the business of running was over, the crowd turned to a relaxing period of breakfast in the sun, with pancakes, bacon, eggs and fruit served by members of the sponsoring Skyland Church, and music from the Squeeze Daddy Zydeco band. A raffle followed with dozens of prizes.
“It was a lot of fun on a beautiful day,” said first-time entrant Christina Schwabecher, who ran the 5K race with her 5-year-old daughter, Ava. “We got a great welcome from the people who did the registration, the run went smoothly, over a beautiful, rolling course, everything smelled good – we had a wonderful time.”
The Mountain Run is an annual charitable event sponsored by Skyland Church. Victor Longo, who placed first in the men’s 70+ category this year, has run in every race in the series, which started in 1992.
Terry Leary, director of this year’s run, reported that more than $9,000 was earned for the benefit of 17 local, community, and international organizations. read more
