Lake Sammamish 21k Review
This will be my 3rd consecutive entry in the Lake Sammamish 21k. That means I really like this event.
FYI ~ Though this is deemed *flat*, it is a gradual incline from start to finish. And unless you are faster on gravel than pavement, IMHO this isn't a *fast* course either. It's 10 miles of gravel w/ the first 2 and last 1 mile on cement. In perspective to other gravel trails, it is a faster one, if that helps. ;)
The first year - 2010 - I did the inaugural marathon. It's put on by Evergreen Trail Runs - two wonderful people I like to call my friends - therefore their races have a very laid back, trail-event feeling. Not formal and not large crowds. Where these may lack, they make up for it through very good planning, communication, and organizing. Also, they treat this race like any trail run: lots of good (read: real!) food at the aid stations.
One lesson learned - in 2011 - was when one of the aid stations (and most likely the most popular aid station for the 21k distance) ran out of cups. I believe this was at mile 6, where I normally do my 1 gel and water break. I know they were working to get more cups out to that station; great for those that were behind me and bad for me. I had to wait until mile 10.5 for water, while clipping a 7:45 pace.
Finish line is like a cozy party with great running friends. Lots of yummy pizza (not crap), Nuun & water by the buckets, and a local bagel bakery that has some of the best bagels around (not dry and bland like you normally get at big events).
And for those who are in for the bling, you do get a finisher's medal. They didn't offer this at the inaugural 2010 race (I had some made for my 2 GFs, to celebrate running 2 marys in 2 weeks), and get a lot of feedback to include these. That's why I love these guys, because they really listen to the racers. 2011 had a finisher medal and a tech tee to boot!
I will see you all out there!
