Fun Bike Ride around Downtown Houston. The 2009 ride date will be Sunday March 22, beginning and ending downtown at McKinney @ Crawford, in Discovery Green, across from the George R. Brown Convention Center Route distances will be approximately 20, 40, and 70 miles Th...e 70 mile riders will pass through the Heights Rest Stop twice Mayor Bill White and State Senator Rodney Ellis, will kick-off this BP MS 150 recommended ride at 7:15 a.m. for the 70-mile route, 7:40 a.m. for the 40-mile route and 8:00 a.m. for the 20-mile route Helmets required for all riders Pre-Registration: $25 for adults and $15 for youth 12 years and under. Pre-Registration ends at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 2009. Registrants will pay $35 on the day of the event. FIRST 2500 REGISTRANTS WILL GET AN EVENT T-SHIRT.   Great Ride

  This was my first ever organized bike event. My friend John and I did the 40 mile route. It was not as tough as I thought it would be. The only hard parts for me were the hills. My left shifter messed up on me during the race, so I could not shift the front gears. That made it tough to get into my granny gears for the hill climbs. We still averaged a good 18 MPH pace, and we really only had John and me for drafting. We had hoped to find a fast group we could tag along with, but that didn't really happen. We still had great fun riding and a good pace too.

  The course had lots of turns and the really important ones were not marked very well. They really needed a person on a bull horn letting people know which way to go for 20, 40, or 70 mile routes. I started to turn with the wrong group and John was fortunate enough to see the sign in time. After the race, we heard several people complaining that they turned the wrong way. They were not happy.

  After the event (and at the aid stations), they had great food and drinks. They even had a great live band with plenty of places to sit on the grass and hang out. A very quality event, I can't wait for next year. :D
