Well organized race through historic Ford Island
This was my first experience with this race. It's very well organized, and had about 2600 participants this year - mostly military and DoD folks and their families. It felt like a small-town race, as a lot of the participants seemed to know each other.
I'm a lifelong civilian, and had only visited Ford island once - to see the Pacific Aviation Museum.
The course is simple enough. It starts at a park near Aloha Stadium, then runs across the Ford Island Bridge, which is a long concrete structure with a couple of humps. Once we got to Ford Island, it was a counterclockwise loop past the military housing, old hangers, the USS Missouri and the aviation museum.
Road conditions were excellent. There isn't much traffic on Ford Island on a weekend morning, so we saw very few vehicles on the roads.
The organizers had set up two water stops near the 2 and 4 mile markers. There were 2 portajohns places nearby, also.
Most of the strollers followed instructions and started near the back of the pack.
Packet pickup was near the race site a week earlier, and was also well organized. It was the quickest pickup process I'd seen at an Oahu race.
I arrived at 5:15 am and found plenty of free parking at the marina. There's also parking near the USS Arizona Memorial.
But 20 minutes later, people were parking across the highway at Aloha Stadium - at $5 a car.
There were plenty of portajohns available before the race - but no drinking water.
There aren't any convenience stores or fast food near the start, so I had brought my own water and beverages.
I've yet to see a race on Oahu that lets users bring their own chips. This race was no exception - but they did use Velcro ankle bracelets that had chips and numbers. These are much easier to attach than the typical rent-a-chip.
The water line after the end of the race needed more volunteers - the line was backing into the finish chute area.
