The Great Aloha Walk
It didn't rain this year, which was awesome. I ran well, so I was happy about my performance in my 5th GAR.
It's hard to take the Great Aloha Run seriously as anything but a big long walk, as there are no qualifying requirements for the bulk of the participants. Except for the very front of the pack, which includes local elites, participants line up wherever they wish.
I've qualified for and run the Peachtree Road Race, which is a much more serious and well-organized event.
There are always too many walkers and strollers lining up in the front pack. I lined up in the last staging area. I'm surprised there aren't more spills and falls on the course.
Scott Tanikawa died after completing this year's race - the first recorded fatality in the GAR's 25 year history. I hope the race committee does something in his memory. Adding a qualifying scheme that separates the runners from the walkers would be a great step.
