Great run!
Despite the 9:40 start time, this year's run was really nice. Attendance swelled to over 11,000 and this was my wife's first official race. She ran the 5k and i ran the 10k. My normal running partner was not with me for this, so I paced another friend of mine who was out to break his PR.
The course was windy, but the day was cool and overcast. Once we navigated through the worst of the crowds, we were able to find our pace and enjoy running through downtown Houston.
Gordon sprinted the last few hundred yards and we finished strong and feeling good. A successful race.

My First 10K!!!
There were sooooo many people there. We ended up fighting through the crowd for the first two miles even though we started at the 9 minute pace position. Even after the first two miles, I felt crowed for the whole race.
I was lucky to have my friend Devin with me. He decided to help me out when his normal partner could not run in the race. It’s nice to have a friend to run with. Devin’s faster than me, so I just let him talk mostly and I focused on not dying.
The course meandered through some of downtown and took a detour through some low income housing areas. It was kind fun running through those areas with people out on their front porch cheering you on in Spanish. It felt like a soccer game, where you were the star being cheered. :\ There was one bigger hill around half way and then a smaller one later. My normal run route has lots of hills, so I was ready for them. They still slow you down though.
After the race, they had different booths set up with free stuff. I got some stuff and signed up for the free massage. I had to wait about 25 minutes for my turn, but it was worth the wait. One thing that was a little annoying was that the booths were not labeled. With tons of people in line, it was difficult to see what they were giving away. In one booth they had monitors set up that were supposed to show the results. I waited a long time for the results to come up but they never did. I finally asked when they would be up. They told me they had posted the results on paper on the “side” of the tent. They never used the TV’s. My official time was 54:51 which was a personal best.
This was my second race and first 10k so I don’t have a lot to compare it to. I did see room for improvement for the start, the course, and the finish, but it was still a worthwhile experience. I am glad I went, and if there is not another 10K going on around the same time, I will probably go back.
