    Those damn cats

...otherwise known as the Los Gatos Dammit run. This was my second running race ever, and first trail race, so I don't have a lot to compare this to. Having said that, I thought that the race was very well organized, and certainly had a feel that is very family friendly and down home. Many families ran together, along with a lot of kids. Don't get me wrong, these kids were tough, and many passed me as I silently cursed them under my breath. :)

The trail is a relatively short 5 miles, and starts out with a lap around the high school track, then out the gate and onto the trail. Being my first trail race, I wasn't prepared for the amount of dust that I had to run through as all the runner hit the dirt. The trail is more or less the same as it has been for the last 35 or so years, from the high school, up the Lexington Reservoir dam and down St Joseph's trail back to the high school track. There are three main hills on the course, each one getting progressively harder. The total elevation gain during the run is 995 feet (according to my trusty Garmin 305).

    Observations:
The trail isn't closed off to casual runners/hikers/bikers, and I saw a few people who apparently weren't aware that the race was being run that morning. It wasn't really a problem for the racers, and everyone seemed to be very understanding.

Mile markers seemed to be off by a constant .25 miles, based on my GPS. I am guessing that the extra lap and a half around the track wasn't taken into consideration? (I wound up running 5.25 even though the race was supposed to be 5.0 miles)

Vendor area was a little sparse, but a nice change from the madness that is usually found at larger events. Kudos for having pre and post race stretching/massages available for free.

Overall I really enjoyed the race, had a great time, and would recommend this race should you want to race among other cool cats (sorry, couldn't help myself) in the future.
