Troika Half Ironman (74.6)
Aside from being longer than expected it was a good day. The splits aren't up yet so I don't know all the details but even though I didn't make my sub 6 goal (the only goal I really had this year-I may have cried a wee bit at the finish line) I'm still pretty happy with it. The swim was long to start with and then one of the main turn buoys came unmoored so for those of us mid to the back of the pack we swam way long, probably 1.5-1.7 miles instead of 1.2. Once I was on the bike I passsed a ton of people (I really need to work on my swim). The bike felt great but I ran out of nutrition at mile 56 (go figure) and it turned out to be 4 miles further with a lot of uphill to T2. I need to learn not to put things inside my running shoes before the race (so that I don't forget to take them on the run) because my toes always seem to go numb during a race and i end up trying to run with gels and things in my shoes :p. Other than that T2 was good, they take your bike, shoes, and helmet from you and hand you your T2 bag so its a quick one (unless you have to stop and take things out of your shoes). The run was very hot and very hard. But with no injuries and no GI issues I was able to keep a steady pace and re-pass the one girl (who happened to be in my age group) that had passed me at the begining of the run. That meant that I got second in my age group! There was no watermelon post race (as a gluten sensitive person who is also allergic to milk I really look forward to things like watermelon, oranges...etc) but they had Lara bars (it was too hot to eat them so I had water and a 1/2 a banana). Even with the problems the race had I still enjoyed it a lot. The new finish line area was great and Going down Aubry L. White Pkwy instead of through Riverside state Park was tons better.
