  • out and back

The course starts out on the street doing your first mile on some roads and weaving through a strip mall parking lot. The rest of the course (both 10k and 20k) are done as an out and back on the W&OD trail. The trail itself is paved and well shaded because of the trees that line both sides of the course. For a good portion of the trail, there is an adjacent dirt path that can be used if you don't like running on pavement. Large, visible signs are on the side of the path marking each mile, although there is no clock except for the finish.

The only con of the race is the width of the trail and the amount of runners on it. Passing can be hard and some groups aren't very respectful to give you the right of way when headed in the opposite direction. Also, the trail is not closed to the general public during the race. You might encounter bikers, other runners, or a mom out with a stroller.
