    St. Paddy's 5

Headed down to the St. Paddy's Five race early today and picked up my number without any issues. Then got in about 15 minute warmup running around the SCC campus. Somebody actually recognized me as I ran by and called out my name, I said, "Hey!" and acknowledged them, but wasn't sure who they were. Took a quick pitstop (no line for the men, but the poor ladies were lined up 30 or 40 deep!) and then lined up at the start with about 10 minutes to go.

Started out well and moved up pretty quickly into the right set of runners. My FR60/foot pod worked great for about the first couple km and let me get my pace dialed in, but then once again failed and pegged the reported pace at sub 2 min/km for the remainder of the race. At that point I had settled in with a couple other guys (and one 13 year old as it turns out) running my target pace (4 min/km) and I lead them for a while and then they passed me and I followed them coming back along the Centennial Trail. I made a small move on the rise just prior to looping down under and then up onto the Green Street bridge, but they caught me just prior to the final turn back towards the parking lot and finish line. I didn't actually realize the finish was on the track so I faded slightly as I figured out how much farther I had to go and how deep I would have to dig. Still had an okay kick at the end to finish a couple seconds ahead of the people that were right around me.

Ended up 9th in my age group out of 58, 43rd out of 448 men, and 50th out of 1051 total finishers. Very satisfying first competitive race after 17 or 18 years away. All the work I've put in since last September has paid off.
