Grandfather Mountain Marathon
I was worried about this one going in, given its noted difficulty and troubles I had during my past two marathon efforts. So, I was pleased with my result. Of the 9 marathons I have completed, I felt the best after this one...so perhaps New River and the Bethel Boogie Marathons had hardened me up. In any case, I was enjoyed the company of fellow MTC'ers Mark Long and Jerry Lindstrand during the first 2/3 of the race and their pace and advise was very helpful and enabled me to finish as I did. Kudos to the givers of cold sponges on US 221. Wow they felt great. There was also a volunteer at the ramp off the Parkway who was giving away some food. The sliced oranges were a wonderful and unexpected treat. The rhododendron were beautiful and it was a very scenic run as expected. I've wanted to run this event since high school (I'm 49 years old). Now, I could say been there done that...but I want to also add...must do again. It was a great experience to finish on the track and take in the bagpipes and the spectacle that is the Highland Games.

Checking weather...

The sponge givers ROCKED my face off. What a great, great, great, great run and event.
If you want to do a nice, tough mountain marathon. Do this one. So much fun, and very beautiful.
