    2010 B.A.A. 5k Race Recap

My current 5k PR sits at the 2010 B.A.A. 5k @ 22:19; The course is a quick 3.1 M tour around downtown Boston that loops Boston Common, the Public Gardens, down scenic Commonwealth Ave and rounds out up the infamous turn onto Boylston street the marathoners take before crossing the Finish Line. It was fast, certainly not flat and kicked my @ss! Between the inclines and the effort, I got a lesson in how hard it hurts to run fast and I can't WAIT to run it again next year!!! The race swag consisted of a tech tee in Boston Marathon Day-glow yellow (I picked mine up on Saturday and they were out of size XS, the size small is HUGE on me. So sad) and a mini Boston Marathon medal that is now one of my favorite blings. I highly recommend tackling the B.A.A. 5k and getting your own mini piece of Boston until you qualify for the 26.2!!! (Be ready to sign up the day they open registration cuz it fills up fast!)

    Great day for a 5k

The BAA knows how to put on a great race, and the 5k doesn't disappoint. While the course isn't entirely flat (nothing is in Boston), it's fast and fun, going through lots of Boston landmarks such as the Common, Beacon Hill, Comm Ave Mall, and of course the iconic finish to the Marathon from Hereford to Boylston Street into Copley Square.

I ran my fastest 5k ever this year, taking nearly a minute off of my last PR, even though the torrential downpour in the morning left me wondering if I'd be able to hit a record pace during the race. Fortunately the rain stopped and only a drizzle or two was able to break free of the clouds, with the sun competing to shine through. The first mile was incredibly slow (even though I ran a fast 7:55) as I had to pass many runners who were poorly situated in the corral. Without pace markers, the corral was a free-for-all, and I found myself passing walkers and joggers even though I placed myself close to the front. My hill training paid off around Tremont and Beacon Streets, and even the tiny incline on Hereford did nothing to slow me down. I found my pace during mile 2, and turned it up a notch for the last 1.1 mile.

An interesting race first for me was getting to use the Port-a-Potty before the race without waiting on line! WOW!

    Overall great race!

Two complaints-no pace signs at the start and the t-shirts were huge! Other than that, really fun and fast race.
