Cowtown 2011
Racetime in the 60s, 90% humidity, and 20mph headwinds. I really was feeling great for the first 15 miles, and then at 17 random hints at future cramps began. After mile 20 I couldn't really keep it around my goal pace of 9:00 anymore, and I was groaning from the cramps in basically every muscle below my hips. But, I walked the water stops, pouring one over my head to keep my core cool, and I ran the rest. I did take a 1-minute walk break in mile 23. I didn't make my goal of 4:00ish, but I do know that the 3:50 and 4:00 pace leader said goodbye to my back at 3 miles and never caught me again. So, the dropping pace leaders was just like Austin last week, too. Tough day, but glad I did it FINALLY!
There were only about 1500 marathoners, so after the half/full split, it went from very crowded to very sparse, and it really felt like we were on a long file. There were a few neighborhoods that really came out and cheered like crazy, and a ton of tourists cheering in the Stockyards historical area, but fairly sparse crowd support compared to all of the Austin races. Someone gave me a beer in the late miles! Mile 25 began a 1.2 mile uphill grade to end the marathon. That was pretty cruel! But the course elevation profile seemed like the hills weren't as bad as last year. Just lots of rolling.
AID: Course support was up & down - Lots of gu, but some of the water stops were very sparsely covered and we had to get our own Dixie cups and dip them into the Gatorade cooler - sorry about that flu, 6000 people behind me!

SPECTATORS: Stockyards, Sundance Square, and Fairmount neighborhood out in force, not much otherwise.
TRAFFIC: Police did a very good job for 1/2. Some of the lonelier stretches thru industrial parks didn't have police at intersections.
GREEN: Not a single trash can ANYWHERE at start corral. Not a single recycle facility ANYWHERE at all.
RESTROOMS: Started at convention center which was unlocked & could use indoor facilities at least for a while!

Checking weather...
