Tri the Coast
The 2nd (and hopefully annual!) "Tri the Coast" sprint triathlon was held on June 6, 2010 at the Colony Club in Half Moon Bay, California. The event is hosted by "Pre and Post on the Coast," a local provider of pre- and post-natal nutritional and fitness coaching. It was billed as a "non-competitive sprint triathlon...great for those who are new to triathlons as well as for the seasoned triathlete looking to practice for upcoming events."
The event is held at at the Colony Club, a posh facility shared by Ocean Colony and the Ritz Carlton hotel. The swim (500m) was held at the Colony's indoor pool, with the bike portion (9 mi.) making two loops through the grounds and onto adjacent coastal trails and roads, and the run (5K) circling through the coast trail where it passes through the Ocean Colony golf course. Very scenic, although given that it's (1) summer and (2) early morning, the weather is most likely going to be foggy and cool.
The "non-competitive" part means no bibs, no timing chips, no body marking. No timing of the participants at all, although there were assistants to facilitate the swim heats.
I did a relay with two friends; the person taking registration seemed a little unclear about relay meaning each person takes a leg of the course: we'd each been assigned a swim heat. Not being timed worked to our advantage, because we didn't have to wait for each person to finish completely before starting our leg.
The event web site said that the event "allows families to participate in the run and bike portions of the event with their children," and that "strollers and bike trailers are welcome," which is extremely cool, but I think it would have been tricky to navigate a bike trail through the dirt trail part. I don't recall seeing anyone with their kids in tow, though.
T-shirts had a great design; prizes were awarded by drawing, and there was plenty of water, bagels, and fresh fruit after. Great event for getting a taste of tri!
