Good race, so-so before and after
First of all, this is a fantastic race for those who don't need an urban setting or tons of cheering spectators to do well. Fairly unchanging scenery (Silver Comet Trail going on through woods, woods and more woods) and not too many spectators (enthusiastic for what there were.) But a fantastic, flat course and a date generally coinciding with perfect weather -- not too hot or cold. The parking at Mable House Amphitheater is a bit of a disaster. OK if you're in early (as I was) but not too good for the later arrivers -- overflow at a school up the street with shuttle buses. Number pickup was morning-of, so there was a mob scene there, and of course at the porta-potties. (There are never enough porta-potties at any race. It's a law.) The start was a bit of a mess -- everyone had to thread their way through some idling buses (always good to inhale diesel fumes before running 13 miles) and scramble to a sign indicating the proper pace. If there were megaphone announcements I didn't hear them. And the finish was the same story: too many people, not enough space, long line for the post-race food and drink (which I skipped.) They need to expand the finish party to cover the entire parking lot and offer more places to pick up refueling supplies. The race itself was well-run. A 1.5 section on the road prior to the trail, then a good 4-5 miles before the superfast started using the other lane to come back helped space out the people to match the available asphalt. Plenty of water stops, all well-staffed. A good race with room for improvement.
