2011 LA Marathon
Torrential rain and freezing wind. Course markers blown down. Sparse cheer sections...
by Charmaine C.
I LOVED THIS RACE. Possibly the worst running conditions (I first ran this back in 2004 and it hit 95 - I think I might prefer the heat)... but I think the volunteers were awesome, the bands that showed up were awesome, the folks who came out to cheer were AMAZING... and the sights, they did not disappoint. I've run 6 LA marathons, but this was my 1st time on the new course. 26th and San Vicente was like magic. I will definitely do this again. -

Los Angeles Marathon
it didnt start raining till after the race started. i didnt feel cold through the race but at one pont my shoe came untied and my fingers were too numb to move and feel the laces. a lady with an umbrella stood close by as i tried to tie my shoe, i could tell she was about to offer to tie my shoe for me before im managed to get it tied.

i enjoyed the race but the logistics were all fucked up. ask me about it ill tell you. i think i like the vibe of the ultras better. -

Swimming the LA Marathon 2011
I loved this years event!!! As soon as the gun went off, it started to drizzle and didnt let off. It went from drizzle to torental rain and wind at some points. I love running in the rain, I trained in it and was ready for it. I improved my previous LA marathon time by almost an hour. For some it was too cold and wet, for me it was just right. There were sparce mile markers which in my mind helped so I wasn't counting down. I was surprised to see the progress I had made and how good I was feeling each time I did see a mile marker.

With all the cold rain and wind, there were still volunteers at water stations and just local spectators handing out gatorade, oranges and candy. It was amazing to see a community come out to cheer us all on.
Only downside was the 1 hour wait from getting off the freeway to finally parking in the stadium. But that's kind of expected in LA. -

What a race!
The race began at the same time as California's final slide into the Pacific. The rain didn't bother me as much as the cold that developed as the wind picked up. I really liked the course - a little hilly the first 6 miles and then just gentle rolling. The start and finish areas could use improvement - especially the finish. The gear pickup was very far away from the finish line and the gear pods were just left open for you to find your bag on your own. I felt sorry for those who did not finish the race early. The crowd there would have been terrible (and in the rain).

Another thing that disappointed me was the lack of consistent mile markers. Only about half of the miles marks were clearly marked. That hurt my ability to monitor my pacing since I don't use a GPS.
I think that if the race organizers could improve on the finish area and make sure that all the miles are marked, this race would be really great.
