    Race Report

    This was a lot hillier than I was lead to believe. The first half was very technical. The second half was a killer too. Lake Merced, oh man, 10 K around and then to have to finish on that long straight highway, even though it was very scenic, was really difficult for me. Not the kind of race I had hoped to have, but a good first marathon experience. Beautiful city, but I don't think I took in as much scenery as I should have. I hit the wall at Mile 21 and needed coaching to finish, but I did finish on my feet and running. Great Tiffany necklace! I love it so much! It's absolutely goreous.

    Blame it on the weather

    For me, the race was really enjoyable and I had no issues at all. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and caused some major issues for some people who finished in the 5-6 hour range. It was cold, windy and raining the day of the race. As a result, volunteers and spectators were taking the silver warming blankets that were intended for the finishers. This means that there were no blankets for many of the runners who finished later and who were soaking wet with sweat and rain, and had to stand around in the wind and cold. Not good. Also, Nike ran out of necklaces and had to hand out necklaces from previous years races to many people who finished later. While Nike says that they will replace the necklace within 10 days, I can't imagine the disappointment these women had after giving their all and then not getting the Bling they were promised. There really is no excuse for this to happen and all the blame goes squarely on Nike.
    I finished the race early so I didn't face these issues. In fact, I never waited in line for a bathroom, post race massage, or even the shuttles going back to Union Square. I would NOT recommend this race for a novice marathoner, but I would recommend it for the half marathon for the above reasons.
