dirty Gears aka Sandy Gears race review
Dirty Gears XC Race 1 is now put to bed. IF there was ever a race that lived up to it's name, this would be the one. To be just a little more accurate, it should have been called Sandy Gears XC Race 1. Today's race was held at Fort Ord, which if you haven't been there, is a super fun place to ride a mountain bike. Just about everything you can want, tough uphills, technical twists and turns, sweet single track, and let us not forget the epic sandpits. (This is the same place that the Sea Otter course is run on each year, albeit a slightly different configuration).
The guys and girls of SV Endurance (http://www.svendurance.com/) put together a great race today, even though the conditions were somewhat challenging with 1 - having a race in a pretty remote location, and 2 - the rain that was on again and off again throughout the day.Today's course? Reminds me why I love mountain biking. Even though there were certainly some seriously tough spots that had to be walked (more about THAT in a sec), slipping between the moss covered trees listening to the birds, moving the bike from right to left racing down a perfect line at speed. Ahhh, great stuff!
The weather held out - mostly - with just a little smattering of rain here and there. The big stuff held off just long enough for us to get the heck out of dodge. SV Endurance had all the racers covered though, chicken noodle soup, hot coffee, and plenty of bagels and other food to feed the starving masses. Couple that with several tents to keep folks dry, a bad a$$ timing system, and a chill atmosphere and you really can't go wrong. I don't have any complaints at all. Not 1. Except for that first hill. Coulda done without that. <grin>
