Now in its 37th year, the Long Island Marathon returns as the premier competitive running event on Long Island and with more opportunities to participate than ever before! The "Earth Day" marathon started out in the 1970's with a 26.2 mile run. Later renamed the "Long Islan...d Marathon, the event continued into the 1980's and the Half Marathon was added in 1984. Since then, the Long Island Marathon and Half Marathon have continued to thrive and evolve into the "RXR Long Island Marathon: Festival of Races," which features a Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K Race, 5K Race, Kids Fun Run and an all new for 2009, 1-Mile Run. Traditionally, the Long Island Marathon has taken place on the first Sunday in May as it will again, this year, on Sunday, May 2, 2010, along with the Half Marathon and 10K Race.
