Right out of the box I have to say that the Bikila LS is the easiest Vibram 5 Fingers model I have ever slipped on my feet. The chief complaint I have heard has been trying to stuff toes into the individual pockets. I’ll admit that I have similar issues from time to time as well. Vibram made a distinct design change with the LS model.

Vibram models have featured a Velcro fastener on its various models, including the KSO, Treks and Bikila. I will admit that in a weaker moment I asked my wife if she thought my shoes were cool in spite of the Velcro, which reminded me of shoes I had as a kid. Her initial reaction when I saw Vibrams online, my wife scoffed but she later relented and came to accept the VFFs for their sheer awesomeness. On the previous models the fastening featured a strap that wrapped around the upper heel to provide a snug fit. The biggest criticism I had of the Bikila, Vibram’s road racer, was that the lone strap bridged the top of the foot. Thus the fit always seemed a bit loose.

The LS is similar to the original Bikila in its distinctive sole and sock liner. Previous Vibram designs featured a very smooth sole with “razor siping”. I ran in a pair of KSO with this sole style for a week and was not impressed. However, the slightly knobbed sole on the Bikila and the LS are very grippy on asphalt and synthetic track surfacing. Not good for muddy trail, but sweet for road running.

The sock liner is a different story. I do wear this pair around and about, even when not running. They are quite comfortable without socks. However, when I run I need the additional protection to prevent blistering at the base of my Achilles. For me this problem is not unique to Vibrams. I experienced similar discomfort in New Balance and Saucony. Sneaker-style liners just irritate my lower Achilles horribly. The simple fix is to wear Injinji brand toe socks when I run. Initially I worried about excessive sweating as Summer’s heat and humidity returned. I am happy to report that the Injinji mid-weight socks wick excessive moisture away quite well. Just the other day I was soaked with sweat, yet my feet were dry.

The Bikila LS overcomes the loose fit and omits the Velcro with the inclusion of a cinched lacing system. Think traditional sneaker, but without the need to double-knot. The designer also added a tongue, giving the upper a more traditional shoe appearance. Because the upper expands like a sneaker and there is tongue to grasp, the LS slides on quite easily. Somehow this design allows my toes to nestle into the pockets without much fuss. The lacing system makes the LS my favorite model of the five different styles I own.

Lastly, if you are not familiar with Vibrams, they are light-weight, breathable and machine washable. Vibrams do not absorb excessive amounts of water when running in wet environments, so weight gain is not an issue as with traditional sneakers. Light feet are happy feet. Fortunately they dry within one day so you won’t miss a run if you have only one pair.

If you are concerned about cushioning Vibram is not for you. If you want a minimalist feel that is “closer” to barefoot while fitting like a shoe, then the LS may be the one.

*Vibram provided the Bikila LS to me at no charge so I could wear-test and review the model for the dailymile community.
