The beginner’s guide to spring weather gear
Spring can be a schizophrenic season, alternating between winter and summer-like temperatures. My advice: Be prepared for both when you step out the door. For that, here are some basic pieces of gear that can keep you warm, cool and/or dry — and combat any other elements spring can throw at you. Windbreaker outer layer Sometimes the wind can be chilly or uncomfortable, even if it’s warmer outside. That’s when a lightweight windbreaker shell can help in the unpredictable spring … Continue reading

Spring Shoe Guide
Who doesn’t love Spring and who doesn’t love running shoes? We all need new kicks when the race season starts. So grab those old beat up winter trainers, take them down to your local running retailer and donate them for the next person. It’s time to treat yourself to some new foot rockets. Here are some of our favorites… The Newton Distance Trainer is one of my favorite re-tools of all the running shoes I have tried. Newton barely messed … Continue reading

dailymission redux: DMers design (stellar) shoes
Last week, Nike launched a new shoe. From New York to Florida to Maryland and beyond, sole-less earthlings invaded shopping malls across the nation. Brushing past police braced in riot gear, these frenzied folks were on a singular mission: Grab the Galaxy (basketball shoe). Jumping Jupiter. The stellar kicks are apparently so out-of-this-world that even Nike itself doesn’t mention the supra natural things on its company site. (Check it out for yourself. Search for ‘Galaxy’ over at Nike.com and see if you have better luck than I … Continue reading

Reviewing RUEZ: Underwear that Performs
Chafing is a potential problem for every runner who takes to the streets. On a long run, the constant friction of skin rubbing on skin or clothing can produce an angry, painful rash that takes days to heal. Check any marathon finish line photo lineup and there’s bound to be at least one male runner with bright red streaks Continue reading

Gear Review: Yurbuds Ironman Series
Today we have two reviews of the Ironman Series Yurbuds. I’ve been there before, and I know a lot of you have also: on your run when one (or both) of your headphones conks out on you. It usually happens about 3-6 months into their lifespan. It’s for this reason that I continually buy cheap headphones. I know that buying the cheap brands doesn’t make much sense logically because quality is an assumed compromise, but I’ve struggled with expensive brands … Continue reading

‘Toe shoe’ benefits? Not in the military
So, the army has banned 5 fingers (or “split toe shoes”), but not for reasons you might expect. “Effective immediately, only those shoes that accommodate all five toes in one compartment are authorized to wear. The reason for that directive: The increasing popularity of toe shoes.” When I first heard of the ban, I thought it was for safety. It turns out that the shoes aren’t “professional” enough for the military. I’ve never been a huge five finger evangelist, so … Continue reading
