My Addiction to Athletes: Confessions of an Extracurricular Vampire

My friends thought I was crazy and from their perspective, I probably was. I’d hang out in the shadows of the bleachers a lot, waiting for the games to end. I even got into it: the sportsmanship, the strategy. And I’ll admit, I had my favorite athletes, but it wasn’t for their agility, power, or skill. I fancied their pulsing veins, their raised heart beats, and they way they wore themselves out, turning themselves into easy targets, low hanging fruit for an old vampire like myself. The zero manifesto: logging miles for the leaderboard

By guest author, Greg S. If you’d like to be a guest author, email your idea or post to the editor. A common grievance heard here on dailymile, most typically on Monday, bemoans the weekly reemergence of the nefarious zero in the weekly mileage indicator. While a majority of dedicated dailymilers undertake to quickly “zap the zero” (especially those who engage in the art of the predawn workout), there are circumstances, such as injury, other priorities, or a lack of … Continue reading

Couch Potato to Marathon in 2 1/2 Months

From guest author, Tom Reaves. If you’d like to be a guest author, email your idea or post to the editor. You would think that being active duty in the military, a service member would be in pretty good shape. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. In my branch, a physical fitness test is performed twice a year. In order to pass the test, a member is required to do a few push-ups, a few sit-ups and run 1 … Continue reading

8 transition zone tips to finish a faster triathlon

photo by Dustin Williams It’s like something out of a bad dream: You have the swim of your life, rushing out of the water with tenacity and focus, peeling off your wetsuit as you run into T1. As you prepare to mount your bike exiting the transition, you realize something really, really important: You left your bike shoes at home that morning. As a triathlete, you probably prepare for your swim, bike, and run portions diligently for each race, but … Continue reading

We’re excited to welcome John F. (aka. HellaSound) as a guest blogger! Optimal Running Music: How to select music for your run, and use to your advantage Music evokes emotion. It sets a mood; it can psych you up or make you feel at peace. It can help you tap into your drive and inspire you to push when you’re tempted to ease up. We intuitively understand the psychological impact music can have on a run, but there’s a simple, … Continue reading

Going Minimalist to Escape Injury: A Runner’s Experience

Hey Dailymilers! I want to start off with a small introduction. My name is Sean Fillner, and I have been running and working out for 20+ years. However, it was not until recently that I buckled down in 2008 and ran my first marathon, the Portland Marathon (PDX), in 4:12. I lost 40 pounds in 2009 and ran Portland again, this time shaving almost 30 minutes off my previous years time (3:42). The following month I ran Seattle in 3:33. … Continue reading

The Boston Marathon: I Can’t Wait

In three days I, along with 25,000+ other runners, will participate in the 114th Boston Marathon. It feels like it’s been two days away for weeks now. Ever since I ran the Eastern States 20 nearly 3 weeks ago as my last long run, I have been suffering through this thing we call the Taper. I. Can’t. Wait. I don’t want to wait. I can taste the Marathon.  I want to start right now.  The horses are itching to be … Continue reading
